I am a sculptor with a background as a machinist and woodworker. My educational training was in Landscape Architecture and I was first licensed to practice in this profession in 1974. I have taken various postgraduate courses in art, sculpture and blacksmithing and am a active member in the California Blacksmithing Association (CBA) and the Artists and Blacksmiths Association of North America (ABANA).
I work in wood and metals using the wood lathe, torch and coal forge to shape and mold materials into pieces, which strive to capture the spirit of the "Craftsman" era. Many raw materials used in these pieces originate from driftwood found on the Santa Cruz coast or metal found in scrap yards and flea markets. Gathering raw materials can often be as enjoyable as creating the pieces and it is not unusual to find forms reminiscent of kelp or sea life incorporated into the artwork.
Most of my work combines the warmth of natural local woods with forged iron. Use of the forge allows metals to be manipulated while in a semi-fluid state and results in shapes and forms which can appear very organic and flowing. Each piece of wood has its own character and the driftwood used will typically have blemishes or voids, which only serve to enhance the unique character of each piece.
I have participated in previous Santa Cruz County Open Studio shows and currently have work available at the Williams Gallery West in Oakhurst and Artisan's Hand Gallery in Carmel Valley. I have participated in various shows and juried competitions and have received recognition for my art at both the State and local level.
